Broomstick putters (or long putters) are back! Here’s who’s using them

These 4 Pros are seeing crazy results with long “broomstick” putters. Is it time for you to try?

Long putter. Belly putter. Broomstick putter. Arm lock putter.

These are all relatively new terms to the world of golf. Back in 2013, the golf world was first enamored with long putters. The likes of Jim Furyk, Fred Couples, Kegan Bradley, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson, Ernie Els, and many more pros used broomstick putters to enhance their putting.

And it worked. So well, the tour added bans to “anchored” putters in 2016, meaning putters couldn’t be attached to a golfer’s body.

After that, the trend died down. Long putters weren’t banned, but they weren’t nearly as popular after the anchor ban.

Why? You couldn’t nestle the putter up against your body, effectively losing the stability.

Fast forward to today.

Bryson Dechambeau, Lucas Glover, Si Woo Kim, An Byeong-hun are all using long putters and improved techniques (like the arm lock putting method). Not only bigger names, but up-and-coming golfers and golf influencers, like Akshay Bhatia and Wesley Bryan added a longer putter to their arsenals.

The result was Bhatia, this past week at The Sentry, was astounding. He went from 183rd of 193 in strokes gained: putting to number one on day three of the tournament.

That’s incredible.

Interested in experimenting with your own long putter? One of our favorite entry-level options is the Precise Stainless Belly Putter with Winn Grip. According to the reviews, the putter is solid, but the cover may not be all that great.

For the price Amazon has it listed, it’s a great option to try out in 2024.

As pros go, so do we recreational and amateur golfers.

We did a quick search on Google Trends for both “broomstick putter” and “long putter.” It seems what’s old (a la 2013) is new again in 2024.

Here are the images for both trends over the last 5 years. Notice the spike on each.

We’ll look to do a long putter review very soon here on Easy Pars, so be sure to check back. And here is a link to a 2013 article from NBC Sports with all the golfers who used long putters 10 years ago.
